What is Barn Cat?

Barn Cat is the natural result of two best friends who love making things. We’re obsessed with creating, we’re obsessed with Michigan, and we’re obsessed with our cats. Combine all of those things, and you get a locally focused art business with “cat” in the name, of course!

Meet the founders

And take a peek into our personalities through the purses we carry.

Emma

Emma’s lived all over the state, currently setting up shop in the ever-so-cozy city of Marquette.

She loves pottery, linocuts, sewing, and taking pictures of her cute little kitty girls, Macaroni and Joan Callamezzo. When she’s not creating, she’s flying from the literal sky in lyra and silks class or pointing her toes in ballet.

Em

After a long adventure around the globe, Em’s returned back to her hometown of Midland, MI. She’s pleased to be back in the ‘burbs with her two babies, Ellie and Olive.

Em loves painting, drawing, crocheting, and cross-stitching. When she’s not creating, she’s playing Animal Crossing or booking her next trip.

What we care about

Making cool stuff

We’re serious about our art, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. At the end of the day, we want to create work that delights. If you “ooo,” “ahhhh,” or giggle when you’re checking out our work, we’ve done our job.

Takin’ care of the environment

Creating artwork uses a lot of materials and, while it’s not a perfect process, we do our very best to limit waste. Environmental consciousness isn’t just good for the world — it’s also a fun challenge for us. Whenever we can, we’ll opt for recycled, thrifted, or sustainable materials.

Not letting the robots win

We make our artwork from our vision, with our hands. Nothing you purchase will ever, ever, ever be made by AI. It’s also our joy to create works that are so absurd there’s no possible way a robot could’ve thought of it. Take that, Robot!

Smoothin’ out ops

We are artsy fartsy, but we both come from Fancy Professional Backgrounds. We understand how much organization, communication, and process can make it easy to collaborate with vendors. We’re dedicated to making it as simple as possible to buy our stuff.

Meet the Kitty Girls

  • Macaroni, an orange tabby cat with green eyes, lying on a cat tree perch with her arms hanging over the perch.

    Macaroni

    The chonk.

She’s also orange, which we all think is really cool. Likes to scream on road trips (same). Has an adorable white belly.

Alternatively known as: Mac, Mac Mac, Chunky Girl, Chunkmaster 3000, Turkey Baby

  • Joan Callamezzo, a tabby cat, laying on top of a white toilet.

    Joan Callamezzo

    The baby.

She runs so much. And she also jumps so much! Mischievous and very present.

Alternatively known as: Joanie, Jojo, Joan “Please Stop Yelling” Callamezzo, Kitty Johnson

  • Ellie, a long haired white and gray cat, rubbing her whiskers on furniture.

    Eloise

    The princess.

She’s very fluffy and she spends a lot of time looking alarmed at the ceiling. Her vet says it’s fine.

Alternatively known as: Ellie, Elle, Elton John, Princess, Fluffy Baby, Cutie Patootie, Pinky

  • Olive, a tabby cat, being so cozy.

    Olive

    The detective.

Profoundly alert and always in spaces you didn’t think she could get to. Toy hog. Mommy’s girl.

Alternatively known as: Ollie, Soupy baby, O, Stanley, Miss Triangle

So that’s what we have goin’ on.
